Giovanni Bernardi is a retired Italian Army Major General. He was born in Naples on November, 21 1949 in a family of military traditions and has a degree in Strategic Sciences from the University of Turin.
He enrolled at the 150th class of the Military Academy (Modena, 1968/70) and later attended the Artillery School (Turin, 1970/72), the Italian Army Staff College (Civitavecchia, 1983/84) and the Civil and Military Parachutist Course (Reggio Emilia, 1981 - Pisa, 1982). He was an artillery battery Deputy Commander and Commander (Novara, Vercelli, Civitavecchia, 1973/80), a Cadet company Commander at the Military Academy (Modena, 1980/83) and a Target Acquisition Group Commander (GRACO - Verona, 1992/93).
His professional experience includes working periods in Albania, Belgium, Germany, Moldova, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and the United States of America. He also had working relations with officers and civilian officials of all NATO and PfP countries.
In the specific field of Public Information, General Bernardi:
· attended the Public Information Officer's Course (SHAPE, Belgium, 1990), the Senior Public Affairs Officer's Course (Dinfos, Usa, 1991), the Italian Army Press Officer's Course (IAGS, Rome, 1994); the NATO/PfP Public Information Seminar (AFSOUTH, Naples, 1995);
· was employed as Chief Public Information at the Italian Military Academy (1985/89), Public Information Officer at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (Belgium, 1989/92), Chief Public Information at Headquarters Allied Land Forces Southern Europe (Verona, 1993/97), Chief Public Information and Spokesman for the Commander of the Multinational Protection Force during Operation "Alba" in Albania (Tirana, April/August 1997);
· since 1989, has been a member of the Italian order of journalists;
· has contributed articles to the daily newspapers and magazines: Gazzetta di Modena, Il Resto del Carlino, L'Opinione, Rivista Militare, Informazioni della Difesa, Il Carabiniere, Analisi Difesa, and from 1994 to 1997 was Editor-in-chief of the LANDSOUTH magazine "NATO a Verona".
At the moment, General Bernardi:
. is a Company Consultant (strategic marketing and communication);
. lectures in Public Information at the Higher Italian Defence Staff College (ISSMI, Rome) and the Italian Navy War College (ISMM, Venice);
. is Editor-in-Chief of the webzine Pagine di Difesa.
General Bernardi is fluent in english and french and has a good knowledge of spanish and portuguese.
